According to news reports, a 23-year-old Carson City woman was the victim of a fatal car accident in Nevada. Nevada Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred early one Friday morning on I-580 in Washoe County. A preliminary investigation by law enforcement revealed that the victim was driving a Honda Civic traveling southbound on I-580 south of Galena Creek Bridge, when she allowed the car to travel onto the bridge’s shoulder, colliding with its concrete barrier. The vehicle flipped over and continued traveling south, ejecting the driver from the car since she was not wearing her seatbelt. The vehicle flipped again onto its wheels and stopped on the inside shoulder of the far left travel lane, facing northeast. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Common Causes of Car Accident Deaths
There are several reasons why Las Vegas car accidents turn fatal. Some of these causes include:
Distracted driving: Whether the distraction includes talking, texting, eating, grooming, changing the radio, using a GPS, or another task while operating as vehicle, it can be dangerous. According to statistics, distracted driving causes approximately eight fatalities each day in the United States.
Aggressive driving: This behavior behind the wheel includes lane changes without using signals, driving in excess of the speed limit, failing to yield the right of way, and following too closely, among others. It is estimated that 1,400 people were killed due to aggressive driving in the four year span between 2008 and 2012.
Stop sign or red light violations: Statistics show that on average two people are killed daily in the United States by drivers who run stop signs or red lights. Often times these types of deadly crashes involved cyclists or pedestrians who are fatally hit when a motorist fails to yield the right of way while traveling through an intersection.
Driving under the influence: The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has noted that, on average, 28 people die every day in DUI-related car accidents across the country. In fact, DUI related car accident deaths have increased or remained steady over the years.
Damages Available in Nevada
The purpose of filing a personal injury or wrongful death claim resulting from a Las Vegas car accident is to seek financial compensation for damages suffered due to the at-fault driver. Generally, damages - or monetary compensation for harm suffered - fall into three broad categories — economic damages, non economic damages, and punitive damages.
Economic damages: These are losses that can be easily calculated into dollar amounts such as property damage, medical bills, and lost wages, among others.
Noneconomic damages: On the contrary, these are losses that are not easily calculated into a dollar amount, such as pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment, and disfigurement among others.
Punitive damages: Only awarded in the most extreme cases, this award is meant to punish the defendant for its bad behavior and put others on notice that such behavior will not be tolerated.
